In ME Scalzo explores the concept of “self” through a sculptural self-portrait displaying the artist’s full likeness to encompass not only his physical features but also imagines a visual representation of his thoughts. To achieve this, Scalzo presents us with a clear resin cast of his head which allows the viewer to peer into his brain, represented here by a conglomeration of matted and intertwined embroidery thread. Together with the transparent shell this forms an abstract representation of “self.”
